Not Feeling Well on Tzom Gedaliah

Question

I’ve had a viral cold since the start of Rosh Hashanah. I’m functioning, but only just, I have headaches and it’s hard to talk much because of the congestion. Do I need to fast on Tzom Gedaliah?

Answer

Shalom uVracha,

If it’s just a local pain, a simple “ache”, one is obligated to fast.

But if there’s general weakness, or a localized pain that causes overall weakness (for example, a strong toothache that drains one's whole body), one is not required to fast.
