Birkat HaTorah Before kiryat shema

Question

Hello Rabbi. When one wakes up and wants to read the shema as soon as possible in order to fulfill the obligation also according to Magen Avraham does he need to say Birkat HaTorah first? Thank you

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

It is ideal to recite the Shema, along with its blessings (i.e. to recite the entire Shacharit), However, if one is running late and must recite the Shema in order to catch the time according to the Magen Avraham or the Gra/Ba'al HaTanya, then le'chatchillah, one should first recite Birkat HaTorah. However, if there is not enough timeto do so, one may recite Kriat Shema immediately.
