How much bread to not have to bench
Question
Can you have one slice of bread and make the Bracha on the topping, for instance an egg or cheese, and not have to say Ha Motzei and bench?
Answer
Shalom!
Thank you for your question.
One who eats bread is required to wash one’s hands (“netillat yadayim”) and say “hamotzi” on the bread. One then recites Birkat Hamazon after one’s meal.
It is not permitted to consume bread without this procedure.
If one wanted to scrape the topping off of bread (i.e. scrape the cheese off of pizza) and eat the topping without any bread remains, then that would be permissible.
