Bracha Guidelines for Repeated Drinking

Question

If someone is sitting and learning and occasionally goes to drink, does he need to make a new blessing each time he goes to the water cooler? I’d appreciate if you could explain the difference between the following cases: If he had in mind to drink again later. If he did not have any specific intention.Or if he explicitly had in mind not to drink again later.Does that affect whether the original blessing still applies?2: If someone is playing soccer (or doing any other activity) and occasionally goes to drink because he gets thirsty — what is the halacha? Does he need to make a new blessing each time? Does it make a difference whether he drinks from a cooler or a bottle? And should he recite a bracha acharona each time?

Answer

 Shalom,

If a person is in a continuous state of drinking — for example, someone holding a bottle and drinking from time to time, or someone walking around in the heat, or playing soccer and needs to drink regularly, he does not need to make a new blessing each time.

However, if someone drinks to satisfy his thirst, and then shifts his focus away from drinking, and only later (regardless of how much time has passed) becomes thirsty again and drinks, he does need to make a new blessing.

As for the 'bracha acharona', he does not recite it if he knows he will be continuing to drink shortly.

But if he drinks his full amount, and is no longer thirsty, then he should recite 'bracha achronah' and when he later becomes thirsty again, he will need to make a new blessing.
