Sitting for Ashrei
Question
I've heard that the rambam holds you have to sit for ashrei, I wanted to know if le'halakha you should be sitting for ashrei?
Answer
Shalom!
Thank you for your question.
Indeed, there are those who interpret the Rambam in Hilchot Tefilla 9:8 as requiring one to be seated when reciting Ashrei.
Nevertheless, this is not cited as a halachic requirement in any of the codes. In fact, the word “Yoshvei” (“to sit”) which is the proposed source for the belief that one must sit when reciting Ashrei, could also simply mean “to dwell” and is unrelated to any instruction to sit.
