Choosing a Kohen for Pidyon HaBen

Question

Hello Rabbi, thank you for your previous answer. I have a question regarding a mitzvah of Pidyon HaBen. Can any G-d fearing Kohen redeem the firstborn or one should look for a Kohen who's מיוחס? I know that until Moshiach will come we don't really know who's considered מיוחס but anyway I've been on few ceremonies with Kohanim described as such. Thank you and chodesh tov

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

Me'ikar Ha'din any Kohen who acts as a Kohen may be used for the Pidyon Haben ceremony.

However Le'halcha there is an advantage to have a Kohen who is Meyuchos like there are those with detailed family trees and other traditions that might strengthen the claim of untainted lineage.

When choosing a Kohen to officiate at a Pidyon Haben one should endeavor to find a Kohen who is a Talmid Chacham,

Relatives who are Kohanim should also be given priority.

It goes without saying that it should be a Kohen who is a G-d fearing and observant Jew.
