Painkillers on Shabbos

Question

For the last few days, I’ve been suffering from strong toothache. I’m fairly sure this will continue on Sabbath. Is there a way to permit me to take painkillers on Sabbath?

Answer

Someone who suffers from strong pains, affecting and weakening the whole body, is allowed to take medications on Shabbos, since such pain puts him in a category of an “ill person”, and not just “suffering from unpleasant sensations”. And therefore, if the toothache is strong, you are allowed to take painkillers.
