Eating on a fast day to take Ritalin

Question

(This refers to the fast of Gedalya, one of the fasts instituted by the prophets.) We have a child over the age of bar-mitzva who has to take Ritalin (methylphenidate). Is he allowed to eat something on a fast day before taking the pill (in the instructions it says that it has to be taken after food). Thank you and have a good year

Answer

Our teacher Rabbi Amram Fried forbids eating before taking this medicine, since taking it once without food will not cause any damage to the child.
