Fasting after a miscarriage

Question

(This refers to the fast of Gedalya, one of the fasts instituted by the prophets.) I had a miscarriage three weeks ago. Right now I’m feeling good. Do I have to fast today?

Answer

You didn’t specify at which stage you had a miscarriage. The rule is that if the miscarriage happens forty days or more after conception, it’s considered giving birth. In that case, you shouldn’t fast for thirty days after the miscarriage. But if the miscarriage happed at an earlier stage, you can fast, if you are feeling healthy.

Have a good year and good tidings
