Fish head without kashruth
Question
I’m in a store right now, and they’re selling fresh fish without a kashruth certificate. Is that a problem? Thank you very much and have a blessed year
Answer
A fish head is oftentimes contaminated with various worms and insects (mostly in between the gills). Someone who doesn’t know how to check for them is likely to inadvertently eat them, which, of course, is forbidden.
Therefore, it’s important to find a fish head with a good kashruth supervision. If you failed to find one, you might still buy a fish head, put it on your table, say all the appropriate prayers (which is the main thing!), but not eat it.
