Lighting after Shabbos for a guest

Question

I live in the Ramat Eshkol neighborhood in Jerusalem, and my parents live in Romema (about an hour’s walk). On Shabbos I’m planning to be with my parents — I’m going to eat and sleep in their house. What should I do with lighting Chanukkah candles?

Answer

Before Shabbos you should light Chanukkah candles in your parents’ house. If you are of Sephardic decent, you should pay a small amount to your father to buy a share in the candles. After Shabbos — the best thing to do is to walk back home before the Shabbos is over, and, as soon as it’s over, to light the candles. Your wife and kids can hear the blessing from your father in Romema. If this is difficult, you can appoint an agent who will light in your house for you after Shabbos. If this is not possible, since it could be that you’ll come home too late to light at the preferred time, you should light in your parents’ house again. But in the latter case, you should stay in your parents’ house for a little bit after Shabbos, and you should eat melave malka there, so it will be considered as if this is your house after Shabbos as well.
