Marital Relations and "Wasting Seed"

Question

Hello Rabbi, my question concerns the prohibition of wasting seed. If the woman is pregnant or uses oral contraceptives, is the seed that doesn't impregnate considered wasted even if it is not thrown on the ground, as in coitus interruptus or condoms? Since I have given up pornography, my life has improved tremendously, from destruction and chaos to enlightenment, and I am wise enough to know that the improvements I notice are not merely "in my head," as materialists would erroneously claim. So, if you could advise me, Rabbi, on whether sex without immediate intent to have children but for bonding with a woman to have children when I can financially support them when the seed does not go outside the woman will have spiritual consequences, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, Ian

Answer

Ian, shalom!

It is great to hear that you have given up pornography and that your life has gotten better. Kol Hakavod!

There is no concern for “wasting seed” when having normal relations with one’s wife. This is true whether she is pregnant or even unable to get pregnant. Normal material relations are always permitted and there is never a concern for spilling seed.

Allow me to recommend that you approach your local rabbi for advice on the proper use of contraceptives in Halacha and on observing “Hilchot Nidda” also known as “Taharat Hamishpacha – Family Purity Laws.” Observing the laws will make you marriage even more fulfilling and rewarding.
