Hell in Judaism

Question

Does the Jewish religion believe there is a hell?

Answer

In Judaism, the concept of Gehinnom represents a place where the souls of sinners undergo punishment for transgressing God’s will.

While Gehinnom is not explicitly mentioned in Scripture, it is alluded to in  Ezekiel  26:20: 'Then I will bring you down, with those who go down to the Pit, to the people of old. I will install you in the netherworld, with those that go down to the Pit.'

References to Gehinnom are also found in several instances in the Mishnah, such as  Pirkei Avot  1:5, 5:19, among others, and are extensively discussed in the Talmud.
