Meaning of a verse in Kohelet
Question
Please why is Koheles 2:24 translated as a question and in some cases as a statement? It sounds as an interrogation. Thanks
Answer
Shalom,
The verse says: 'There is nothing worthwhile for a man but to eat and drink and afford himself enjoyment with his means. And even that, I noted, comes from God'.
You are likely referring to Rashi's interpretation. He understands this sentence as a question: 'Is it not worthwhile...'
His source is Jeremiah 22:15: 'Your father ate and drank, and dispensed justice and equity, then all went well with him'. The assumption is that if one does so, 'all will go well'.
There are two further readings of the verse.
The Midrash alters the wording: 'Nothing is good for a man other than eating and drinking'.
Some commentators explain it as follows: a person who eats and drinks gains nothing beyond the immediate satisfaction of eating and drinking.
