Uncertainties about my Judaism and Catholicism

Question

Shalom! I have a big question.. my family has Jewish roots but they denie them, also we are all catholic (so I am) but I started learning and discovering about my Jewish heritage. So here is my question: I am catholic, I do believe that Yeshua is the mashiaj and my savior. But I observe, recognize and respect most of the Jewish laws and traditions. I do observe shabbat. And I try to be part and respect all the Jewish holidays. I read the Torah and I've been learning Hebrew. I really have a big connection with Judaism, I talk to Hashem asking for help with this trouble that I have.. I pray and all.. but I'm very confused about what is the truth, which one I should choose. And I'm totally alone in this because it doesn't matter how hard I try, my family won't accept this heritage.. so I spend most of my shabbos alone.. and that kind of lets me down.. well thanks for reading my question!

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for writing.

Although you have Jewish roots, you are only Jewish if your mother, and her mother, are Jewish, since Judaism is dependent on Jewish maternal lineage. If that is not the case, then you are not actually Jewish. As such, there is no reason for you to observe Shabbat and holidays, and it would even be forbidden for you to do so.

Judaism believes that G-d loves all mankind, all that G-d wants from the Non-Jewish world is that they observe 7 precepts, or commandments. They are known as the “Noahide Laws.” They are called “Noahide Laws” because the requirement to observe these seven laws was given Noah, a righteous non-Jew (yes, the fellow from the story with the flood).

The 7 laws are:

1. Don’t murder.

2. Don’t steal.

3. Don’t worship false gods.

4. Don’t be sexually immoral.

5. Don’t eat a limb from an animal that is still alive.

6. Don’t curse G-d.

7. Establish a system of justice.

Any human being who observes these laws goes to heaven. There is no need to follow any other religion. You can pray to G-d in your own words and your own language.

Allow me to recommend the following sites to learn more about what G-d expects from Gentiles: https://www.netivonline.org/ which specializes in helping non-Jews with religious beliefs. There is a wealth of information there that you will find useful and inspiring.
