Calculating Ma'aser from Charity Already Given
Question
I wanted to ask: what happens if I gave money to charity and only afterward remembered that I was supposed to give ma’aser (tithes)? Can I, after I gave, count the charity I gave as ma’aser? And if yes, how much time afterward can one still count charity as ma’aser?
Answer
Shalom,
Any charity you gave can be counted as part of your ma’aser amount.
The obligation of ma’aser is simply a way of measuring and enhancing the mitzvah of giving charity — it’s not a separate mitzvah.
